Sang Har Meen @ Chyniss, SStwo Mall

The month of March happens to see two birthdays in my family, my dad and youngest sister. So, in the spirit of makan-makan Malaysia and family love, I told my dad that we're going to have a nice dinner at Chyniis (pronounced as Chinese, not chee-nees), a Chinese restaurant located in SStwo Mall.

Word has it, that the owner is one of the brothers of Greenview Restaurant in Section 19, just down the road from where SStwo Mall is. Hence it came as no surprise as one of Chyniis's signature dish was their 'sang har meen'; fresh water prawns with noodles soaked in a delectable egg gravy. Seeing that the head chef is from Greenview Restaurant, and how my General Manager raved so much about the sang har meen, I had to try it for myself.

Chyniis's signature dish - Sang har meen (RM 16/100gm).
The giant serving above, is for 6 pax (RM 160). The dish came with 3 giant fresh water prawns, split into two, a generous portion of noodles and uber awesome egg gravy. My dad was slurping the noodles and had a happy smile on his face. And when I told him that the head chef is from Greenview, he exclaimed that the dish tasted exactly like how Greenview would serve it. Now he wants to bring his friends here, hehe!

We had other dishes for dinner that night too, but I only took a picture of the sang har meen, and Whatsapped it to my other sister in KK, just to piss her off :P Other dishes we tried were their Tea Smoked Village Chicken (RM 38/half a bird), some braised pork knuckle (can't remember the exact name of the dish), asparagus and tofu, all which were pretty tasty.

The total bill (plus tit bits and taxes) came up to RM 338, half of which were from the sang har meen. Needless to say, everyone was stuffed from dinner, and still dreaming about the noodles heh! Definitely a place worth coming back for seconds!

Spinach and Mozzarella Egg Bake

I've recently signed up with Pinterest, and I'm attracted by the many lovely food pictures there :P Pinterest, in my own opinion, is Twitter with pretty pictures. You sign up, create your boards, and start checking out other boards and pin them to your board. One of the many interesting recipes I've discovered from Pinterest is this: Spinach and Mozzarella Egg Bake
The ingredients are simple, and the cooking method is easy. And one fine night, I decided to try this recipe out, as I had a bad spinach in my fridge and some 1/3 pack of mozzarella in the freezer. I had halved the ingredient amount as it was for a late dinner.

Half a bag of spinach (leaves only)
4 eggs
1/3 pack of mozzarella (you can use more cheese, it will taste better!)
Some milk or cream
A handful of green peas (optional: I added them to add some crunch to the dish)
Salt and pepper to taste

Wash the spinach leaves and set aside. In a pot, bring water to boil and blanch the green peas and spinach leaves until the leaves are just about wilted. Drain the spinach leaves and green peas and lay them into an over-proof bowl. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the greens. In a bowl, beat the eggs and season with some salt and pepper (or some chicken stock if you wish). Pour some milk or cream for that smooth texture, then pour the egg mixture on top of the vegetables. Using a fork, gently stir the mixture so that the egg mixture cheese and vegetables are well combined. Place the dish into the oven at 200°C for about 30 minutes, or until the egg mixtures sets and the cheese is golden brown. Don't bake the dish too long, or else the egg mixture will be a little tough and rubbery.

Ta-daa! The final outcome, kinda reminds me of a quiche, only without the crust. The taste? Simply and delicious, but the next time I'm making this, I'm going to add some bacon for that added kick!!! And I'll also have to time it better, felt the egg mixture was a wee bit rubbery. Maybe I didn't put enough cheese too, as the original recipe actually has a lot more cheese. And I will also season the egg mixture a little more for that extra flavour.

Organic Vegetarian Food @ Simple Life, SStwo Mall

There's this organic vegetarian shop here in SStwo Mall, which has never been my pit stop for food. It's not that I don't eat organic nor vegetarian food, it's just that it has never really crossed my mind to walk into it.

So one fine Friday, while the rest of my colleagues had gone of for lunch and I was stuck in the office trying to solve some email issues, my colleague prodded me to go have some vegetarian food downstairs. Being a vegetarian himself, I figured the mall also poses some food limitations to him sometimes. So I figured, okla, since I've never tried that place before, why not?

One thing about vegetarian food is, and I do believe most people would agree with me, is the use of soy in all their faux meat products. I'm fine with soy, I just don't agree with faux meat. If you're going to be a vegan, why is then, faux meat made to look and taste like real meat? I think the methodology is questionable here, but this is just my personal opinion. All that gimmick of making faux meat look and taste like real meat, it feels a little like living in a lie with your vegan self. And I for one, think that if so much effort was made to make faux meat, look and taste like the real thing, god knows what sort of process and ingredients actually went into making that faux meat, right? No thanks, I'll stick to the real thing. And if I walk into a vegetarian restaurant, I'll stick to the beancurds and mushrooms, thanks!

Sweet and sour abalone mushroom set, RM 15.90++
So there I was with my colleague, flipping the menu. As it was my first time there, I decided to go with the Sweet and Sour Abalone Mushroom, which comes with a bowl of multi-grain rice, a claypot serving of mushrooms in sweet and sour sauce, 2 side dishes and energy soup - which is essentially water cress soup.

My first though of the set when it came was "Wow, generous portions!". The multi-grain rice had red beans in it, and honestly, I like my red beans in tong sui more than rice. The multi-grain rice was a first for me, and I honestly didn't enjoy it on its own (I scooped out all the red bean too). But after soaking it in the sweet and sour sauce, the rice tasted much better :D

The mushrooms were deep fried and soaked in a nicely done sweet and sour sauce. Now wouldn't it be more awesome if the mushrooms were pork instead, hmmm :P OK, jokes aside, the sweet and sour mushrooms tasted pretty good actually. The soup however, had a bit too much white pepper in it though. And I've seen soups using better quality wolf berries (a.k.a goji berries) than the ones served in this restaurant.

Overall, the organic vegetarian lunch was ok for me. The multi-grain rice was ok, but only with the sauce, I wouldn't eat it on its own. I wouldn't mind going back there to try some other dishes, maybe their noodles. But no nasi lemak with faux chicken/beef rendang, thank you. Even if you claim the faux meat taste exactly like the real thing. In that case, I rather go for the real thing. But that's just me.

I've been living with this fear since 2008. I've never made this fear public, simply because most with laugh it off, some would think it's being silly, and many would never fully understand the reason behind it.

It still brings tears to my eyes sometimes, and on most parts, I'm just being emotional about it. But the fear is real. Very real. And it is this fear that has made me choose to delay the decision.

If you've gotten to know me over the years, and have crossed paths with me, you might realize that when I make decisions, I'm pretty firm about them. Be it my social life, activities, work related matters, I'd like to know that somehow I'm control of the situation (or at least I try to be), keeping calm and collective and go forth with my decisions. I know what I want and I know what it takes to achieve them.

But for the last 4 years, this is one situation that has kept me in fear of it. Until today, I still don't have a clear direction or purpose about it. My answer is still "I don't know".

I'm bogged down by this fear over the last 4 years. This lingering feeling which won't go away. And it haunts me, bringing a lot of doubts and questions which disturbs me. Sometimes I just brush it off and concentrate on other more important things, but the fear will finds its way and creep back into my life again. I have no answers, I have no reassurance, and I find it very hard to see any beauty from it right now. Because all I can think of is that the odds are against me, and no matter how hard I try to find the answers, it will always elude me. I don't smoke, I don't drink, I exercise regularly and eat well. But the odds don't support me. Do you know how painful that is?

How something which happened 4 years ago, can cause such deep scars until today. You might laugh at me, you might call me silly/stupid, you might say I'm being foolish about things, you might even say I'm just thinking too much. But this fear is very real, and I honestly don't want to go through the same shit I went through 4 years ago. Because I know it if happens again, this time the wounds will never heal, and the consequences will be even more severe and bitter.

It's just one shot. There is no in-between. I'm sorry my decision has directly impacted you, but I have to be selfish to protect myself from the immense pain. I'm almost at my threshold.

I'm not sure what I believe in anymore. I'm not sure what to do anymore.
